Colors - 5 Modern Artists

so i've been lucky enough to visit many galleries and art shows while i've been home this summer, and it's been a nice change from the new york art scene and quite an experience! I've been fortunuate enough to have a behind the scenes look at gallery exhibitions and what it takes to get things started. My cousin's husband, Jeet, has one of many exhibitions for this summer in Ontario and I was able to attend the opening reception for one of them called 'Colors - 5 Modern Artists' which took place at the Living Arts Centre.

This exhibiton is a collaboration of 5 modern artists of Indian descent. The show features the works of Jeet Aulakh and fellow Mississauga artist Youngo Verma, with Mahirwan Mamtani, who is from Germany, Shiv Singh and Surjit Akre who live in India. The gallery showcases the 'perpetual, sprititual, conceptual, cosmic and tantra in art' . It features works influenced by eastern culture and the vibrant colours of their nation

Jeet says "The influence is always there and your background is always a part of you, It drives the work." He explained that "By itself, the work is conceptual. Together, it's like going through the deep experience of meditation." Regardless of background or culture, the exhibition offers something for anyone interested in art. "It isn't just for one community. Its experiences are seen in the day-to-day life and the spiritual life. I think everyone will find something personal about it."

I was really happy to meet these artists and speak to them. I must say I was proud, especially since it's my first time seeing any art displayed in a gallery created by artists of indian descent. I will admit, not all of the pieces i saw were my favourite. Some of them i just did not understand or think were that creative. A lot of them i thought were ridiculously priced.. yikes! regardless, I still hope to see some more in the future! that would be cool ha. It was an interesting way to learn more about culture and where my parents are from, through the eyes of artists! it's a whole different perspective..

I have a book on the artists and more information about them and some images of their work that i can show you all when i get back for those who are interested! hope everyone is enjoying their summer!
