Scrapile

"Scrapile," formed by two Brooklyn based designers, Bart Bettencourt and Carlos Salgado use scraps that are usually wasted to form and create interesting eco-friendly furnitures.

"SCRAPILE is the collaborative work of designers Bart Bettencourt and Carlos Salgado. Seeking to create a possitive environmental impact with their work, these two have developed a unique method of collecting and repurposing discarded scraps of wood from New York's woodworking industry. Since it's conception in Fall 2003, this project has continued to yield an ever-evolving line of furniture and product which by its very nature insists each piece be one of a kind."

AIAS deisgn competition for retirement housing

house of freedom design competition

the American Institute of Architecture Students is hosting a competition for a residential model for the aging population. And it is exactly what we're doing for our water street project.

"“Home is where you hang your hat” as the old saying goes. However, as a person ages, his or her ability to stay in their home and community can be put into jeopardy. Most older homes were not designed for older residents and as their needs and abilities change people can be forced to move even though an overwhelming majority of older Americans (89%) have said they want to remain in their current home and community for as long as possible. This is a growing problem as the baby boomer generation ages.

This competition calls for the design of a single family home ranging in size from 1,000 square feet to 2,000 square feet. Participants should consider how “Universal Design” is incorporated in the house so the residents can live in the house for a lifetime. "

CITY Racks competition

the New York City department of transportation has proposed a competition to provide bicycle parking racks through out the city. the registration deadline is april 23rd and submission by june 9th. for more information please visit, http://nycityracks.wordpress.com

What is CITYRACKS?

CITYRACKS is a program run by the New York City Department of Transportation that provides FREE sidewalk bicycle parking racks throughout New York City to encourage cycling for commuting, short trips and errands. CityRacks are not intended to be used for long-term parking.

How will CITYRACKS benefit my neighborhood?

CITYRACKS provides added convenience for the entire cycling community: businesses, commuters, shoppers, messengers and food diliverers and students. Businesses can expand their client base and improve customer satisfaction by providing convenient parking nearby. Also, the availability of CITYRACKS parking discourages cyclists from parking at mailboxes, parking meters, trees, and other sidewalk structures.

What do the bicycle racks look like?

The bicycle accommodates all types of bicycles and locks. The racks are continuous curve square tubing pipe made of black coated polyester finish steel. CITYRACKS are installed in two sizes: an upside-down "U" rack for two bikes and a double loop for five bikes.

Where are CITYRACKS installed?

CITYRACKS are installed on City-owned sidewalks throughout the five boroughs. The sites selected are virtually everywhere bicyclists go: business districts, neighborhood shopping areas, universities, museums, libraries. The siting criteria for CITYRACKS are as follows:

• City-owned property;
• Wide concrete sidewalks (minimum sidewalk width 12 feet);
• Removed from the natural flow of pedestrians, usually at the curb and always away from crosswalks;
• Usually a minimum of 6 feet from other street furniture (e.g., street signs, mailboxes, benches, telephones);
• Greater distances from certain features(e.g., up to 13 feet from fire hydrants, and 15 feet from bus stop shelters and newsstands);
• CityRacks can NOT be installed on pavers, cobblestone, brick, stone/slate slabs, custom/patterned concrete or metal grating.

How are CITYRACKS installed?

After a request is received and evaluated, those sites deemed suitable for inspection will be given an on-site evaluation. If the location is approved, it will be added to the contractor's next order for manufacturing and installation. After installation, the CITYRACKS remain the property of the City of New York. The City assumes responsibility for the rack but not the bicycles parked at it.

Hey all.. i was looking at Steven Holl's work and saw this.. He took an existing building in NYC and completely transformed the space without affecting the exterior.. its pretty interesting so check it out!

Wake Up and Dream

Hey guys, so Jimi, Manu, Mairo, Hanna Eunbee and I, did an installation for this yoga center called Jivamukti Yoga School in Union Square. They had an event this past weekend called Evolver: Wake Up and Dream and needed a few people to decorate a space for them; their concept was dreams and about living them, they had lectures, DJs, performers and interactive art. Our installation turned out pretty awesome (if I may say) and everyone was really into it. We were all proud of the end result. All the hard work had paid off especially when we saw people interacting with our cardboard light boxes and our color stars made out of recycled water bottles with glows sticks inside.

retirement housing comes to the city

hi people. we're now doing a project on urban housing targeting to clients within the age group that's considered the baby-boommers. when it comes to retirement housing. what comes to most people's mind is probably healthcare and the stereotypical bingo setting. but why can't it be a fun and exciting place to live? I've come across a new york times article that talks about the rising demand on urban retirement housing. as of now, there are only 30 urban retirement housing facilities out of 2,240 in the states. so how do we design and provide a suitable space for our clients so they can live comfortably and enjoy the vibrant lifestyle in the city?

what is art to you???

january 14th, we went to MOMA for our 1st studio class to see Martin Puryear and to basically to start a new year and new semester with lots of inspiration and new ideas. well, i think we all had some different ideas about what we saw at the museum. I think I saw a lot of cool stuff and didn't want to leave when the museum was closing. it's such a shame that I'm living here in new york and rarely find myself really taking advantage of it.

we all went back to the studio to have an discussion about what we thought about the works. so here's konstantin's sketch we thought it'd generate a good discussion. (konstantin's not registered yet so i'm posting this for him.)

"my overall impression on this museum visit physically made me sick. my question is: what is this world coming to? our new generation is exposed to degenerate exhibitions loaded with psychedelic mind altering understanding of art and beauty: though i appreciate martin puryear's craft (carpentry) it doesn't change my mind about the art thats being displayed: the only thing i enjoy about moma is the architecture of the building: and the sylliuetes of people that fill the space. MY QUESTION IS: WHAT WILL ART BE LIKE IN 20 YEARS FROM TODAY???

guys, sorry for the lack of updates. hope everyone's had a good time off. yesterday manu invited me to join her and greg at this panel with Michel Gondry, the maker of "eternal sunhine of the spotless mind" and "the science of sleep," in soho. it was an event arranged by indieWIRE. This French director was quite an amazing and funny individual. He was also sharing about how he came about to become who he is today. As a kid, Michel Gondry said he was always quite but always interested in observing creating little things. He also said he was lucky to have his parents' support for his creative works.

on January 24th, his new film "Be kind Rewind" is going to have an exhibit at Deitch.

Bruce M. Tharp from core77 did an interview, "positively every worthy issue in design," with Don Norman where they touched upon the topic of designing for task or people. It takes on a different look in design, I think definitely for many interior designers. does your product really functions well while it has a sleek look of design.

Don Norman is a professor emeritus of cognitive science at University of California, San Diego and a Professor of Computer Science at Northwestern University, where he also co-directs the dual degree MBA + Engineering degree program between the Kellogg school and Northwestern Engineering.
