EVACUATED TUBE SOLAR HOT WATER SYSTEM

Finally completed solar hot water system.
Not having any working samples to look at,
it took some time. I customized
design for existing conditions and soldered
all copper. System is calculated to
estimated consumption, local solar azimuth
and winter sun solstice to maximize the
performance throughout 12 months. 
Main components are:
*40 evacuated glass tubes on collector
*closed loop 3/4" insulated copper piping
for heat transferring glycol mixture
*two circulation pumps and valves
*additional 80gallon hot water tank to
existing 95ga hot water boiler
*temperature difference controllers
We have had 100% solar domestic hot water for three weeks by now. There is
constant reserve of 140...150 degree Fahrenheit hot water.  Con Edison inspectors are
expected to pay a visit soon to see why my house natural gas consumption is irregularly low :-)

Hope to see more of these systems on the rooftops in NYC to cut down overall
fossil fuel consumption. Plus it PAYS OFF!

today the 2009 thesis show for interior design at School of Visual Arts opens at art director's club on 29th street and 6th avenue. four seniors including Mohamed Amer, Hayley Gardner, Ambar Margarida, and Larissa Raywood are awarded for their excellence in academic work. Stay At My Home by Designasyl

December 17th, 2008

Recent industrial design graduates Designasyl have sent us images of their thesis project Stay At My Home, a range of temporary furniture for overnight guests.

The furniture, which includes a mattress, removable drawer, lamp and carpet, is stored in and around a side table when not in use.

Designasyl was formed by designers Luzia Kälin and Nicole Lehner, recent graduates from Swiss university FHNW Gestaltung & Kunst.

stay at my home

stay at my home is a series of objects which enables the host to set up a comfortable overnight stay for his guest. The series is designed for hosts who do not have a specific guestroom available.

The main object of the series is a comfortable mattress, which offers the guest a comfortable bed for the night. Due to a special foam composition, the mattress can be rolled up and stowed away under the furniture.

Ricardo Vargas and Abi Jarkowiec have recycled cardboard tubes and connected them using a steel support to create a nifty chair called the Conolounge.

I prefer twine ;)

island, furniture designed by Taipei based firm xrange

"hanna look what you could've done if you have proceeded with the chair"

Island is simultaneously room furniture, isolation space and
interaction platform for lounging, sitting, crawling and interacting.

It can be used either as seating, an open “room” or a “platform” within a larger space. Constructed entirely of 25mm layers of PU foam, the island is soft to the touch, yet rigid for firm support, and is easy to maintain.

Climate Change: American Museum of Natural History

Climate Change: the threat to life and a new energy future, a new exhibition at the American Museum of Natural History, opens today and will be until August 16th, 2009. Pay your visit to the museum it should be worth a trip.

at the end of the exhibit there's a wall for the visitors to contribute how we can improve our current condition.

this whole exhibit is kinda like a condensed version of Murray's sustainable design class with delecately made models, videos and graphics. and it basically covers all the aspects of climate change from the possible causes and how we as humans can contribute to it.

the downside of this exhibit is that it's sort of expensive as an intention to make people aware of the problems we all share.
