Just what we needed...
Recent industrial design graduates Designasyl have sent us images of their thesis project Stay At My Home, a range of temporary furniture for overnight guests.
The furniture, which includes a mattress, removable drawer, lamp and carpet, is stored in and around a side table when not in use.
Designasyl was formed by designers Luzia Kälin and Nicole Lehner, recent graduates from Swiss university FHNW Gestaltung & Kunst.
The following is from Designasyl:
–
stay at my home
stay at my home is a series of objects which enables the host to set up a comfortable overnight stay for his guest. The series is designed for hosts who do not have a specific guestroom available.
The main object of the series is a comfortable mattress, which offers the guest a comfortable bed for the night. Due to a special foam composition, the mattress can be rolled up and stowed away under the furniture.

island, furniture designed by Taipei based firm xrange
Island is simultaneously room furniture, isolation space and
interaction platform for lounging, sitting, crawling and interacting.
It can be used either as seating, an open “room” or a “platform” within a larger space. Constructed entirely of 25mm layers of PU foam, the island is soft to the touch, yet rigid for firm support, and is easy to maintain.

Founded in 2003, Taipei-based xrange is a multi-disciplinary architectural design office that is pushing to change the way design is done and realized in Asia. Combining advanced design and manufacturing technologies with concise strategic concepts, the work of xrange encompasses urban planning, architecture, landscape, environments, products and concepts. XRANGE operates between the largest (+) and the smallest (-) of project scales to consolidate aspects of business, technology, theory, culture and design into original built forms.

Climate Change: American Museum of Natural History

this whole exhibit is kinda like a condensed version of Murray's sustainable design class with delecately made models, videos and graphics. and it basically covers all the aspects of climate change from the possible causes and how we as humans can contribute to it.
the downside of this exhibit is that it's sort of expensive as an intention to make people aware of the problems we all share.

Mañana mañana....
Mañanismo (tomorrowism) is a new concept of work in design.
Manifiesto mañanista
1-Don´t do today things that you can do tomorrow.2- The best inspiration moment is in the bathroom.
3-There are no diference between work, food and work.
4- A correct mañanist never think in tomorrow.
5- Never say that you don´t like something if you didn´t try it.
6-
Playing one day with a mañanist you learn more that talking with him/her during one year.
7- A good mañanist sould not to take things too seriously.
8- Everithing could change, anything is stable, like Nature. mañanist improvise.
9- Mañanist people don´t design for other designers, they design for the real people like his/her mum.
10-A good mañanista use her/his laptop to put papers on it to draw.

Park(ing) Day - NYC

Park(ing) Day NYC is an effort of the New York City Streets Renaissance which offers individuals and groups small grants to turn more than 50 parking spots throughout New York City's 5 boroughs into human-friendly places for a single day. These small, temporary public spaces provide a breath of relief from the auto-clogged reality of New York City, and aim to spark a dialogue about our valuable public space and how we choose to use it."

Si-bao Elementary School

Si-bao elementary school is located in Taroko National Park, Hualien, Taiwan. The school once faced the destiny of being shut down due to the lack of students since most of the parents have moved into the cities in seek of job opportunities. In order to make use of the beautiful mountains and the natural resources in Hua Lien for a wonderful learning environment, the school went under a change in the teaching materials: the nature. The mission statement of Shi-bao elementary school makes sure the children learn with a delightful heart and self-motivation. With the advantage of being in the nature, children in Si-bao elementary school get to learn about the insects in where the insects live and learn about the plants in where they grow.
Si-bao elementary school also went under a renovation by D.Z. Architects & Associates. Finished in 2003, the staff and children now reside on a green campus.
a little about Shi-Bao:
"Before 2001, we were just a branch school of Fu-shih Elementary School in the Taroko National Park. 5 years ago(1996), we needed to rebuild our school. How can we be the first independent school in the Taroko National Park? The Hualian County government understood our difficult position. Besides, the school authorities, teachers, the guardian, the local personalities and so on.....all gave fresh impetus to rebuild.
Life is but a dream, carrying out dreams via step by step.
Li Lyu- Jhih is the architect of this school. Architect Li Lyu- Jhih takes user's demand and the feeling, so she discussed construction with school authorities, teachers, and students. We started building for 5 years , and are working hard to conformity opinion in the design of these buildings in Si-bao.
The dream shall come true for those who having faith remains steady !!
Si-bao Elementary School in Hualien Taroko National Park is a boarding school. We are learning in the design of hexagon classroom. First floor are office, health center, subject classrooms and open area ; second floor are education center and one computer classroom. Because we adopt primary class, each class defines 12 people. There are only 72 students in Si-bao Elementary School."

we call it the Marilyn Monroe building.
"Once people started to believe in us we had a chance to make it."
I always drive by this construction site and decided to finally look into it.. only to discover that I am now a fan of Yansong Ma's work. look him up! the building design rotates 360 degrees from bottom to top!
He's a rising star in chinese architecture, and won a major international design competition, that received over 90 submissions from 70 countries around the world, where designers were to design a 50-story residential tower.
"Did you think that you would take it?"
Ma: "When we saw the final six we were quite sure. [laughs]"
Ma and his team have become the first Chinese-based architects to ever win a competition outside of China. My dad REALLY wants to move into it... and i'll admit that i do too.. all units in the Absolute Tower were apparently sold in a day, and apparently Ma designed a second, smaller building that also sold out really fast..!! ha, well that sucks..sorry dad...
so anyway, if you get a chance, I posted this because I think the interview on the link below is definitely worth reading. With the video and interview, you get an insight into the minds of young architects, as most students in the studio hope to be one day, which is really thought provoking and also their thoughts on chinese architecture.. quite interesting! i thought that some of you may be interested as well

003 Figure-ground theory states that.....

the space that results from placing figures should be considered as carefully as the figures themselves.
space is called negative space if it is unshaped after the placement of figures. it is positive space if it has a shape.

Colors - 5 Modern Artists

This exhibiton is a collaboration of 5 modern artists of Indian descent. The show features the works of Jeet Aulakh and fellow Mississauga artist Youngo Verma, with Mahirwan Mamtani, who is from Germany, Shiv Singh and Surjit Akre who live in India. The gallery showcases the 'perpetual, sprititual, conceptual, cosmic and tantra in art' . It features works influenced by eastern culture and the vibrant colours of their nation
Jeet says "The influence is always there and your background is always a part of you, It drives the work." He explained that "By itself, the work is conceptual. Together, it's like going through the deep experience of meditation." Regardless of background or culture, the exhibition offers something for anyone interested in art. "It isn't just for one community. Its experiences are seen in the day-to-day life and the spiritual life. I think everyone will find something personal about it."
I was really happy to meet these artists and speak to them. I must say I was proud, especially since it's my first time seeing any art displayed in a gallery created by artists of indian descent. I will admit, not all of the pieces i saw were my favourite. Some of them i just did not understand or think were that creative. A lot of them i thought were ridiculously priced.. yikes! regardless, I still hope to see some more in the future! that would be cool ha. It was an interesting way to learn more about culture and where my parents are from, through the eyes of artists! it's a whole different perspective..
I have a book on the artists and more information about them and some images of their work that i can show you all when i get back for those who are interested! hope everyone is enjoying their summer!

Public Farm 1 @ MOMA: PS1
the installation located in the P.S.1 court yard consists of hundreds of cardboard tubes with diameters ranging from 28" to 34". inside the tubes will be flowers, plants and vegetables. the tubes will span across the main space over one of the wall. (so whoever has been to p.s.1 can imagine the scale of this thing) local farm products are also going to be sold at the site. and there is going to be a lot of fun interactive features with the tubes.
here are some sneak peaks behind Public Farm .1 :
